Folding BABY

Who it's for

New parents, usually at a baby shower. Often folded alongside the child's name once it's known — the two make a natural pair on a shelf.

Which book to use

A children's hardback, ideally one they'll recognise. Board books are too thick per page to fold, so reach for a chapter-book hardback rather than a picture book.

Where it ends up

Nursery shelves are usually high and shallow, which suits a folded book. Keep it out of reach — the folds are sharp-edged and undo easily under small hands.

How long it takes

An evening or two. Make it before the birth: nobody has time afterwards, including you.

What BABY does under the folds

Two Bs mean two pairs of closed loops, which is a lot of curve for four letters. BABY reads noticeably better with 300 pages than with 250.

Every sheet of a folded book shows exactly one band, so a letter is only as detailed as the number of pages behind it. At 300 pages, BABY gets roughly 38 sheets per letter. If your book is thinner than that, the Book Fit Check above will say so — and offer splitting the word across two books, which is often the better answer. See choosing the right book for how to check page count before you buy.

BABY pattern — questions

How many pages do I need to fold BABY?

About 300 pages. BABY is 4 letters, and each letter needs roughly 60 pages — about 30 folded sheets — to stay crisp. You can go as low as 200, but at that thickness the strokes start merging into each other.

Which book should I use for BABY?

A children's hardback, ideally one they'll recognise. Board books are too thick per page to fold, so reach for a chapter-book hardback rather than a picture book.
