What is book folding?

Book folding is a paper craft where you fold the pages of a book to create stunning 3D patterns and designs. Unlike book cutting or origami, the pages remain attached to the spine, transforming an ordinary book into a decorative sculpture. No cutting is involved - just precise folding!

Is FoldedBook free to use?

Yes. The whole ready-made library of 350+ patterns is free to download — no account, no sharing. In the generator, previews are always free and your first pattern is free too; each one after that is 1 credit, from one-time packs with no subscription.

What book thickness works best?

Books with 300-500 pages work best for detailed patterns. Paperbacks with crisp pages are ideal for beginners. Avoid hardcover books as they are too stiff to fold easily.

How do I use a book folding pattern generator?

Simply upload an image or enter text, input your book's measurements (height and page count), then click generate. You'll get a free PDF with exact fold measurements for each page, downloaded instantly and emailed to you.

Can I use any book for book folding?

Paperback books with 300-500 crisp pages work best. Avoid hardcover books, glossy pages, yellowed pages, or books under 200 pages. Mass market paperbacks (pocket-sized novels) are the most popular choice.

Where can I get free book folding patterns?

Right here. Create custom patterns for names, words and numbers, or pick from 350+ ready-made hearts, stars and shapes, and download the PDF instantly — free, with no sharing or sign-up required.

How long does it take to fold a book?

A typical book folding project takes 2-4 hours depending on the pattern complexity and your experience level. It's a relaxing, meditative process - perfect for putting on music or a podcast!

Do I need special tools for book folding?

For the basic technique, nothing but a book and your printed pattern — a ruler or bone folder makes sharper creases but is not required. Cut & Fold is the exception and says so on every pattern that uses it: those need scissors or a craft knife, because you cut in at the edge of each strip instead of folding past it. Around a fifth of the ready-made patterns are Cut & Fold; the generator tells you which technique your design needs before you download.

Is there a book folding calculator?

That is what the generator does. Enter your book's height and page count and it works out where every fold goes, sheet by sheet, then hands you the measurements as a printable PDF. There is no arithmetic left for you to do — and if your book is an unusual size, it recalculates for that book rather than assuming a standard one.

Do I need to install book folding software?

No. FoldedBook runs in the browser on a phone or a computer — nothing to install, no licence, and no account needed to design and preview. Desktop book folding software exists and generally costs money; this does the same job on the page you are reading.

What's the difference between book folding and book cutting?

Both keep the book intact, and the difference is how much detail survives. Plain folding (measure, mark, fold) takes one fold per sheet, needs no tools, and can be undone by unfolding — but a design with interior detail loses it, because a sheet can only carry one band. Cut & Fold cuts in at each strip boundary so those details stay, at the cost of scissors and of being permanent. Book carving is a third thing: whole shapes cut out of the page block. We generate the first two, and tell you which one your design needs.

What are the most popular book folding designs?

The most popular designs include hearts, names and initials, dates (wedding, anniversary, birthday), infinity symbols, stars, music notes, and simple words like 'LOVE' or 'HOME'. Single letters and simple shapes are perfect for beginners.

Where can I find cheap books for folding?

The best places are thrift stores ($0.50-$2), library book sales ($0.25-$1), garage sales ($0.25-$1), and dollar stores ($1). Look for mass market paperbacks in the 'acceptable' condition category - perfect for crafting!

Supported image types?

Black and white patterns work best. We support PNG, JPG, and SVG. Simple lines, text, or silhouettes yield clearer folding lines.
