For the basic technique, nothing but a book and your printed pattern — a ruler or bone folder makes sharper creases but is not required. Cut & Fold is the exception and says so on every pattern that uses it: those need scissors or a craft knife, because you cut in at the edge of each strip instead of folding past it. Cut & Fold cuts in at each strip boundary so those details stay, at the cost of scissors and of being permanent. Book carving is a third thing: whole shapes cut out of the page block.
