Who it's for
Your own mantelpiece more often than anyone else's, and the folded book most likely to come back out every December.
Which book to use
Red or green cloth binding if you can find one; a gilt-edged hardback if you can't. This is the one project where the cover colour genuinely matters, because it sits among decorations.
Where it ends up
Mantelpiece, with the covers opened wider than usual so it takes up more width among the greenery. Lit from the side rather than the front — the fold shadows are what make it read.
How long it takes
An evening or two, but start in November. Every December project gets abandoned around the 20th.
What NOEL does under the folds
The single narrow L leaves an empty corner at the bottom right. Centre the word slightly left of the spine so the finished piece doesn't look like it's drifting.
Every sheet of a folded book shows exactly one band, so a letter is only as detailed as the number of pages behind it. At 300 pages, NOEL gets roughly 38 sheets per letter. If your book is thinner than that, the Book Fit Check above will say so — and offer splitting the word across two books, which is often the better answer. See choosing the right book for how to check page count before you buy.
How many pages do I need to fold NOEL?
About 300 pages. NOEL is 4 letters, and each letter needs roughly 60 pages — about 30 folded sheets — to stay crisp. You can go as low as 200, but at that thickness the strokes start merging into each other.
